This is a good read. The mystery of where the girl on the train and the baby came from is tantalizing and slowly, artfully revealed. The interaction between them and the Chicago couple who take them in is unpredictable and intriguing. The characters are believable. The ending is satisfying.BUT my enjoyment was diluted by the poor editing. To the editor: People do not "make due", they make do. One does not "pour over" books or spreadsheets; one pores over them. "Impetuousness" does not mean defiance or anger. And it's a garbage CHUTE, for heaven's sake, not a garbage "shoot"! Go back to school and take that English course again. Here endeth the rant.

Pretty Baby Mary Kubica 9780778317708 Books Reviews
This is my 2nd book from this author, and the 2nd time I've given her top ratings! I thought I had something figured out around the 30%, and I was correct about my guess (confirmed at about 80%) - but that did not take away from me putting this book down - nor was it the ultimate climax, so guessing it, and validating it later- there is more story around it. Sorry, hard to explain without a spoiler!
As with my other review of this author's book (The Good Girl) it's hard to say what I loved about it, or what drove me to stay up to finish it, without being a spoiler.. This is one of the reasons I really like this author's style of writing. When my friends have asked what the book is about (this one, or Good Girl) I say, read what's on .. Anything more that drove me crazy, needing to know - would be a spoiler!!!
Another reason I'm really fan girl'ing on this author is how she finishes telling the story in her books (yes, Good Girl and this one). She could 'drag' it on, or have a sequel, but it ends. And I respect that a lot! (Think Gone Girl - as that is how I came upon this author, as Good Girl was compared to Gone Girl - and in my humble opinion, of all the books listed "like Gone Girl" - this was/is the only one that warrants that honor).
I look forward to this author's book Spring 2016!!
Pretty Baby is my first read for Mary Kubica. I’ve been hearing a lot about Mary Kubica’s books and I was very intrigued to read her books. However, every time I planned on starting with one of her books something just came on. This time, I am lucky I did read this book.
In Pretty Baby, it all starts by chance when Heidi Wood notices a teenage girl with a baby at the train platform. Heidi is having a very peaceful life with her husband and teenage daughter. Being of same age as her daughter, the teenage girl at the train platform catches Heidi’s interest. The girl is holding a baby in the very cold weather. She sees her daily no matter how cold and rainy the day is. No one at the platform seems to notice or care about the girl except for the good hearted Heidi. Heidi can’t resist the urge to approach the girl and know more about her. In a series of events, Heidi and the teenage girl become more acquainted and both the girl and the baby become part of Heidi’s life.
This thriller is narrated from two different perspectives, Heidi’s and the girl’s. It catches your interest right from the start. And just like the teenage girl and her baby got hold of Heidi’s interest, the thriller gets hold of the reader smoothly but tightly. I got very interested just as Heidi was. I wanted to know more and was eager to turn the pages to get to the bottom of it. As you think you know what it is all about, Mary Kubica takes you to more twists and turns.
Mary Kubica’s writing style was great. The thriller was narrated by both Heidi and the teenage girl switching between current and past time. With each page and as more questions in your mind are answered, another mysterious layer is added. Heidi’s character was well crafted. I could relate to her and sympathize with her. I loved the way Mary Kubica narrated the details. Also, the teenage girl whom you can have your presumptions about her at first, has a lot of depth.
Pretty Baby is not only a fast paced mystery thriller, but also a heart touching one. It brings around a lot of feelings. My heart ached for the girl and also for Heidi. It made me think a lot how things cannot be taken for granted. We are no smarter than the others facing trouble. Things can turn bad in a matter of seconds. There’s nothing more heart aching than the sorrows of a child.
I really loved and enjoyed Pretty Baby. Nonetheless, I highly admire Mary Kubica. She’s a person that can easily get to your heart. You feel she’s like an affectionate friend or relative. I am currently reading her next book Don’t You Cry and planning to read her previous one The Good Girl.
The best way to describe this book is unsettling. I do want to say that I am glad I was not introduced to Mary Kubica through either this novel or "Every Last Lie" because both of these were not easy reads. When I say not easy reads I mean they were very hard to get into.
On the way to work one very rainy April morning Heidi sees a teenage homeless girl with baby waiting at the train. She sees her again and again, day after day. One evening she asks the girl to meet her for a meal at the diner where the girl (Wilow) reluctantly shows up with her baby Ruby. Things escalate from there. Before you know it know it Willow and Ruby are staying with Heidi, her husband Chris and her twelve year old daughter Zoe. The story told through Heidi, Willow and Chris' POV.
My problems with the book has nothing to do with the various POVs or even the unsettling aspects of the book. My issue with the book is that it's just not written as well as "The Good Girl" or "Don't You Cry". I am only giving this three stars because it did take me a little bit to figure out the twist. At least longer than it normally does. In reality I think this is a 2.5 stars book. After reading the first two books that I read by Kubica I was really hoping for her other books to be as entertaining but I have been disappointed.
This is a good read. The mystery of where the girl on the train and the baby came from is tantalizing and slowly, artfully revealed. The interaction between them and the Chicago couple who take them in is unpredictable and intriguing. The characters are believable. The ending is satisfying.
BUT my enjoyment was diluted by the poor editing. To the editor People do not "make due", they make do. One does not "pour over" books or spreadsheets; one pores over them.
